Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
San Diego City Council declared housing a human right. “This is important for us as a city to make this commitment to the residents of San Diego amidst our housing and homelessness crisis, and we will do what it takes to meet the moment,” San Diego City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera said. To meet this commitment, the city needs to add 100,000 housing units by 2029, and 45,000 of those units need to be designated for low-income earners. (KPBS)
A Chula Vista Fire Department paramedic was assaulted while trying to give medical aid. “He was violently attacked in a small area while trying to provide care,” commented Chula Vista Firefighters union president Darrell Roberts. Physical assaults on those who arrive at the scene to help are becoming more common. Firefighters, medics and paramedics need to continue training in how to de-escalate situations and protect themselves from attack. Fortunately, the paramedic was able to return to work. Residents of Rolando are in the dark about why the city didn't "Get It Done." “The streets here in the neighborhood are pitch black. It's not safe for the kids, it's not safe for the parked cars,” said resident Daniel Berge. He's sent pictures of crashes, has sent in Get It Done reports, and sent emails to city officials, but to no avail. Now, after two years of complaints, the city indicated that it will do an assessment on the neighborhood's broken streetlights before the end of this year. (CBS News 8)
Caltrans announced several road closures in San Diego. The northbound Interstate 805 connector to the Eastbound Interstate 8 will be closed midnight - 5 a.m. on Wednesday. The off-ramp will also be closed at that time. According to Caltrans, drivers should continue on northbound I-805 to Murray Ridge Road and head south on the southbound I-805 on-ramp to the eastbound I-8 connector. Travelers can check Quick Map online for real-time traffic information. (FOX 5 San Diego)
