Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. Infrastructure spending will shift to underserved areas. Using a new scoring system, San Diego will provide a higher priority to neighborhoods in the southern part of the city. According to Rania Amen, Engineering and Capital Projects Department Director: "We want to ensure we have increased that scoring weight to really address the underserved communities." (Del Mar Times)
  2. Diegoaelurus, a.k.a. San Diego’s cat, was a saber-toothed predator in San Diego’s coastal rainforests about 42 million years ago. Earlier this year, a lower jawbone at the San Diego History Museum was identified as Diegoaelurus. "San Diego has become an incredible resource for saber-tooth evolution," according to Ashley Poust, a researcher at the museum. "San Diego has a lot to tell us. There are teases of both modern cats and saber-teeth true cats." (Del Mar Times)
  3. Take kids to a museum during Kids Free October. For Alethea Arguilez, this opportunity was a no-brainer. As executive director of First Five San Diego, Alethea and the San Diego Museum Council joined together to create an enriching experience for children. "Touching things, tasting things, feeling things, hearing things, smelling things — all of those activities are really going to help them thrive and develop," Arguilez explained. Ninety percent of children's brains develops before the age of 5. So, develop your child's brain — take your kids to a museum during Kids Free October. (Spectrum News 1)
  4. See the newest homes/lots on the market. Despite the small inventory of properties available in and around San Diego, there are still some bargains to be had. Looking for a cozy place? See the 3-bedroom, 2-bath residence in a 55+ community for just under $150K. Looking for something more substantial? See another home with 3 beds and 4 baths for $1.4 million. Need something in between? How about this home with 2 beds, and 2 baths, listed at $670K. Want something different? Take a look at a property with a small studio in Poway with an asking price of $119K. Take a peek – you may be pleasantly surprised at what you find. (San Diego Patch)

  • Protect pets from Halloween frights: "Ghouls and ghosts aren't the only scary things this season! Trick-or-treaters, doorbells ringing on repeat and spooky decor can be frightening (and hazardous) for our pets. Treat your pet to a happy Halloween with these trick-free tips: 🍬Make sure sweets are kept out of reach for pets 🎃 Check that your pet's cute costume fits correctly, and don't leave them unattended while in their spirited attire, 👻 Watch out for decorations that could harm your pet, such as candles, glow sticks, electrical cords and smaller items that are choking hazards 😺 Doors are opening non-stop for parties and costumed revelers, so be sure your pet has up-to-date identification, including an ID tag, license and microchip!"
