Here are five of the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. With an abundance of caution, SDSU closed its Exercise and Nutritional Sciences building, while officials of the County’s Health and Human Services Agency investigated a reported case of Legionnaire’s disease in the campus community. Cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle aches and headaches are typical symptoms of the disease. Students were encouraged to contact instructors with questions about canceled or rescheduled classes. (City News Service)
  2. Along with the profusion of rain here in San Diego, mosquitos can now be seen in great numbers. One type, the Aedes Aegypti, is of particular concern, as it's known as the Yellow Fever mosquito. Residents are urged to check any items that hold water — bottle caps, toys, plant saucers, tarps, frisbees, etc. If you collect rain, or have a pond on your property, San Diego County offers a free solution. Check it out at Mosquito Fish. (CBS News 8)
  3. Why are high-income residents choosing to rent, rather than buy homes in San Diego? Yes, it's partly due to the high cost of housing and the low inventory available for purchase. Rentals, especially in luxury condos and apartments, offer amenities, safety and convenience not available with home ownership. In addition, no maintenance is necessary, as with home ownership. The addition of high-income earners arriving here from other areas further contributes to the change in the market. (CBS News 8)
  4. Two new laws, SB12 and SB1421, are exposing the SDPD, bringing evidence of racist comments, excessive force and offensive behavior to the public. Proof of lies, discrimination, unlawful searches or arrests were among the violations discovered. The SDPD also disciplined several officers for sexually offensive behavior. City leaders and police oversight officials found the cases eye-opening. (NBC San Diego)
  5. Through Mar. 26, National Geographic’s Beyond King Tut: An Immersive Experience, will be on display at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. With cutting-edge visuals and nine distinct multi-sensory galleries, the exhibit brings guests a unique experience of the world of King Tutankhamun, as well as the discovery of his tomb in November 1922. Visitors can enjoy the Egyptian art, learn about the Egyptian religion and even view Senet, a favorite Egyptian board game. (Locale Magazine)
