Man's Body Found Near San Diego Bay

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man's body was found with an apparent gunshot wound Wednesday near San Diego Bay, authorities said.

A security guard working at the Maritime Museum of San Diego reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday that an unidentified woman said she heard a gunshot and then saw a man on the ground, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body while searching the area of 1700 N. Harbor Drive, police said. The man, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead soon after.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said. Based on the Harbor Police Department's initial observations, police believe the man's injuries were likely self-inflicted. His name was withheld pending family notification.

During their preliminary investigation, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office requested the police department's homicide unit respond to investigate what led up to the man's death. His cause of death was still under investigation and will be determined by the Medical Examiner.
