Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. It's called "mass timber," and it may revolutionize the building of high rises here in San Diego. It's a product created by gluing planks of wood together to form large panels and beams, and it's climate-friendly. Right now, crews are putting up a "mass timber" building just off the I-15 in Scripps Ranch, as part of an experiment by UCSD School of Engineering. No one will ever occupy the building, as it will be torn down next year. (KPBS)
  2. If approved by the City Council, a ban on polystyrene foam will take effect in April. This ban will bring changes for San Diego businesses. Items affected by the ban would include polystyrene food containers, coolers, pool toys, and more. The ban is supported by environmental groups and opposed by the California Restaurant Association. The San Diego City Council is scheduled to vote on the issue today. (Del Mar Times)
  3. It was a shocking event: A beloved dog named Finn was taken from a home here in San Diego. The owner was heartbroken. Luckily, footage from a neighbor’s surveillance camera showed the theft in progress. It showed a delivery person loading the golden retriever into her car and driving off. Police agreed that the film was credible evidence. Finn was recovered, and the delivery driver was arrested for grand theft and booked into the Vista Detention Facility. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  4. Today is DĂa de los Muertos, and all around Old Town, there are altars with food and adults and kids dressed as skeletons. The names of hundreds have been written in chalk as a memorial to those who have been lost. Nina Medina believes that as long as you remember them, the dead are still with us. Medina is a member of the National Latino Peace Officers Association, and she prepared an altar as a celebration of life for those police officers who are now deceased. The holiday is a day of love and remembrance in the Mexican community. (NBC San Diego)
