Navy Working To Recover Fighter Jet Following Crash Into San Diego Bay

Recovery efforts are focused on safely removing the aircraft from the water while minimizing environmental impact, officials said.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Military crews were working Thursday to recover a fighter jet that crashed and sank Wednesday into San Diego Bay.

The EA-18G Growler went down shortly after 10:15 a.m. Wednesday during an aborted landing approach to Naval Air Station North Island, according to military officials.

The two-person crew safely ejected from the aircraft before it went into the water near Shelter Island. They were rescued and taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. They were in stable condition.
