Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego

  1. San Diego County has added another helicopter to its arsenal of weapons available to fight wildfires. The Sikorsky CH-54A can carry 2,650 gallons of water to a fire site. "The new Type 1 helicopter significantly bolsters our local air attack arsenal. It can drop about seven times as much water as the existing County firefighting helicopters," said Jeff Collins, San Diego County Fire director. "This is a tremendous amount of water available in one drop," said fire Capt. Frank LoCoco, CAL FIRE San Diego. "It allows us to fight these fires aggressively and keep them small." This new helicopter will operate out of the Ramona Airport. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
  2. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has filed a complaint against SeaWorld San Diego, accusing it of federal Animal Welfare Act violations. PETA accused SeaWorld of housing incompatible animals together. “PETA is calling on the USDA to investigate SeaWorld for holding animals in conditions so stressful they would lead to horrific attacks, and reminds families to stay away from any park that imprisons orcas or other animals,” said the organization’s Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. The filing came after a visitor to the park sent a video of a clash among orcas at SeaWorld. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Times of San Diego)
  3. County residents between the ages of 13 and 19 can now be nominated for the fourth annual “25 Most Remarkable Teens,” contest. The program is run by San Diego County Public Defender Randy Mize’s Office. “Community members are urged to nominate a young person who is motivated, committed to their community, inspiring in their talents/skills, or who has shown the courage to confront and overcome adversity,” said Connie Howard, a spokesperson for the Public Defender’s Office. The final date for nominations is Sept. 12. Finalists will be invited to a special ceremony on Nov. 10. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Rancho Santa Fe Review)
