Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:
- A new sheriff is in town and her name is Kelly Martinez. What does Martinez bring to the table? In addition to her 37 years in the sheriff's department, Martinez will concentrate her efforts on public safety, particularly in three areas. Keeping drugs from entering the County at the border and convicting those who attempt to bring drugs in will be among her goals. Another of her goals is to prevent deaths within the seven County jails by screening for medical and mental health issues before those convicted enter County facilities. Martinez also wants to hire a diverse workforce so that people will see themselves in the police force. She welcomes anyone looking for a career to consider joining the sheriff’s department as all are needed to keep San Diego safe. (NBC San Diego)
- Everyone loves an animal story, and San Diego certainly has an abundance of them. Whether it’s a story about a tiny blue penguin who gets his custom orthopedic shoes, to a baby sea lion who is rescued from Pacific Coast Highway, to a story of the world’s oldest dog, these are stories that will make you laugh, cry, or cheer. (San Diego Patch)
- No, they're not pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but we do not know exactly what they are. Found in Imperial Beach, these may be sea turtle eggs. Our area is not typically a nesting area for the turtles that usually nest along the warmer Baja California Sur coast. So, why are they here? Scientist would like to study the eggs to find the answer. If you find turtle eggs along the beach, please notify a lifeguard and contact NOAA. (CBS News 8)
- It’s a remarkable sight. It’s an 88-foot Norfolk Pine, and it’s located at Liberty Station. On Friday night hundreds of people gathered for the tree lighting and entered the public market at Liberty Station to get an early start to shop prior to small business Saturday. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. It's a treat for the spirit. (FOX 5 San Diego)
