Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego:
- The CDC has announced that masks 😷 are no longer required. Also, quarantine and 6-foot distancing are no longer necessary. Are COVID-19 precautions being abandoned too soon? Dr. Eric Topal 👨⚕️ of Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla thinks they are. Topal points out that San Diego is still at a high level of infection. He adds that a lack of vaccination in the general population is part of the problem. Vaccinations 💉 prevent severe disease. There is also ‘long COVID-19’ to consider. The newest wave of COVID-19 may mutate and evolve. It may be only a matter of time before a new variant 🦠 shows up. We don’t know what is coming. - In a 4-1 vote🗳️ , San Diego County Supervisors supported a federal proposal 📜 aimed to protect reproductive health information. "What we are going to be doing is ensuring that information cannot be sold and cannot be used to prosecute individuals who are just living their lives," Lawson-Remer recently told CBS8. If passed by Congress, the bill, authored by Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, would mandate privacy protections🔐 for patients. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
- Prices have risen📈. Residents have been seeking ways to make ends meet. Some residents have found that public transit 💺 is easy on the budget. When gas was up to $6 per gallon, Margaret Cano, who rides the trolley 🚃 to work, paid only $6 for a daily pass. She was able to save a bundle of money. Trolley ridership has increased upwards of 50 percent, while bus ridership 🚌 has increased more than 40 percent in the past year. It's good news for MTS especially after ridership plunged during the pandemic. "This definitely means that people are going back to their schools, are going back in person at work, and they're choosing transit to be able to that. We're hitting about 200,000 trips on weekdays," said Grecia Figueroa, MTS spokesperson. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)

From my notebook:
- San Diego Zoo: "Sometimes a good bird🦜pun just flies over our heads. Red-tailed black cockatoos, one of several cockatoo species native to Australia, have distinct color patterns that make them easy to recognize. Females, like Bella, have yellow spots on their head, neck, wings, and orange-yellow coloration on their breast and undertail." (San Diego Zoo via Instagram)
- San Diego Humane Society: "Does the summer heat have you stressing about your pet's safety? Since our furry friends aren't able to tell us if they are overheating or if the ground is too warm for their paws🐾, we need to be extra diligent in ensuring their safety and comfort. To help with this, we're sharing tips to help keep our pets cool and out of danger this season!" (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- San Diego Botanic Garden🏡: "For many years, the San Diego Botanic Garden has held a homegrown holiday lighting display during December. Now the Encinitas attraction is cranking up the dial to host the megawatt international attraction Lightscape. The large-scale lighting spectacle — which has been produced at public gardens around the world — will run Nov. 18 through Jan. 1 at the 37-acre property." (San Diego Botanic Garden via Facebook)
