Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. It's a tremendous achievement and San Diego is so proud! Scripps Research's Barry Sharpless has been awarded his second Nobel Prize for his "Click Chemistry" breakthrough. "Click chemistry" refers to the way molecules join together to fit like Legos. "Barry Sharpless has had a tremendous impact on chemistry, first with his development of asymmetric synthesis and now with his elegant ‘click chemistry,’” said Peter Schultz, president and CEO of Scripps Research. “His work opened whole new scientific frontiers that have had a major impact on the fields of chemistry, biology, and medicine." (Times of San Diego)
  2. It’s called the Digital Navigator program, and its purpose is to close the digital divide. According to city figures, 53K San Diegans are without Internet access. Operating under the SD Access 4 All initiative, the Digital Navigator program has provided thousands of new laptops and made them available for checkout from local libraries. Persons interested in the program can get assistance in English, Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, Dari/Farsi, French, Hindi, Russian and Vietnamese. See details for how to contact the program, or call 800-350-6945. (NBC San Diego)
  3. San Diego’s rising gas prices have driven many to abandon their cars and ride the MTS trolleys and buses instead. “We think a big reason for that is obviously the higher gas prices,” said Mark Olson, MTS Director of Marketing & Communications. “People are seeing it as a much more affordable way to get around and it is more affordable.” According to Olson, MTS fare prices will remain the same. “A one-way ticket on our transit system is $2.50,” said Olson. 4. Sure, you love it here! The mild temperatures and relaxed, laid-back lifestyle are a big draw. Even Money magazine has put us in its list of best places to live. With a median income of $96K and an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent, America’s Finest City is a great place to live. To choose the winners, Money magazine considers economic opportunities, quality of life and diversity. Money notes that "the city enjoys a good school system and is home to a branch of the University of California, which ranked No. 7 in Money’s 10 Best Colleges in California and No. 12 in our list of the 25 Best Colleges in America."
