One Killed In East Village Freeway Crash

SAN DIEGO, CA — A traffic crash on Interstate 5 near Petco Park over the weekend left one person dead and another jailed on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, authorities reported Monday.
The motorist, a 23-year-old Chula Vista woman, lost control of the 2016 Kia Soul she was driving on the southbound side of the freeway through the East Village shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle veered to the right, went up an embankment near Imperial Avenue and hit an electrical box, which in turn struck a pedestrian, killing her at the scene, CHP spokesperson Stephany Perez said.

The motorist was arrested on suspicion of DUI, the Highway Patrol reported.
The identities of both the suspect and the victim were not immediately released.
