- Rather than sending the police to manage the situation, the City of La Mesa is trying something new to help the homeless. Outreach workers now respond to non-emergency calls as part of a push to develop new solutions to the growing number of people who are on the streets in the area. The Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement program (HOME) finds solutions to the underlying reasons why people ended up without homes. Of course, there are challenges. - City of San Diego: "From tutoring at libraries to keeping our parks clean, volunteers provide integral services for our community. We're celebrating National Volunteer Week from April 17 to April 24, by recognizing hundreds of volunteers who donated more than 145,000 hours in 2021.
