SAN DIEGO, CA — More than 40 pets were rescued May 28 from a home in northern San Diego County.

Humane officers from the nonprofit organization recovered 28 dogs, six puppies, five cats, three kittens and a chameleon from an Escondido residence, according to San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson.

"For the mass intake of animals, our humane officers were able to get the last cat and a kitten in the house — they had been hiding — bringing the total number now to 43," Thompson told Patch.

The pets were taken to veterinary specialists at the Humane Society for evaluation and treatment of unspecified medical conditions. As of Tuesday, 20 of the pets were already available for adoption.

"The rest of the pets are in varying statuses, including awaiting spay/neuter, which is a step before adoption if the pet is unaltered," Thompson said.
