Murder Suspect Once Lived In San Diego Home Where Human Remains Were Found: Report

The District Attorney's Office named Dwight William Rhone, ​74, as a person of interest in the investigation.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man in custody on suspicion of committing a 2023 murder has been named a person of interest in the investigation into human remains found earlier this week at a San Diego home.

The investigation began on Tuesday, when San Diego Police Cold Case/Missing Persons investigators and the San Diego County District Attorney's Office assisted the California Highway Patrol and FBI in serving a search warrant at 3443 Newton Avenue in San Diego, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The District Attorney's Office on Wednesday named Dwight William Rhone, 74, as a person of interest in the investigation. Rhone is already in custody without bail on murder and other charges in the shooting of 54-year-old Bernardo Moreno on Interstate 5, near state Route 905, then setting Moreno's body on fire in October 2023.

It was not clear whether the 2023 murder case and the human remains found this week were connected. Rhone is not currently charged for any crimes connected to the remains.

The identity of the remains and the person's cause of death remain under investigation.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office said Rhone was a previous tenant of the Newton Avenue house.
