SAN DIEGO, CA — Forty pets displaced by the devastating Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County will be available for adoption in San Diego County.

San Diego Humane Society accepted 39 dogs and one kitten from Pasadena Humane Society as the agency deals with an "incredible influx of animals" impacted by the blaze, which has scorched 13,956 acres and destroyed or damaged more than 5,000 structures, according to Cal Fire.

Four shelter staff teams from San Diego traveled to Pasadena on Thursday to bring back 28 dogs and a kitten to the organization's campuses in Escondido and San Diego, according to San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson. On Wednesday, two teams picked up 11 dogs from the Pasadena shelter.

"San Diego Humane Society is already over capacity with dogs, and now helping our partners in Pasadena due to this catastrophic event," Thompson said.

The organization's emergency response team will deploy Friday to assist Pasadena Humane Society, according to Thompson. Four fire-certified members will assess needs for assistance in response to the Eaton Fire, while one humane officer will help with animal care response.

"Once our team is in place, they will offer relief to the local teams and determine next steps for Saturday, Sunday and beyond," Thompson said.
