The man was sitting on the school campus with a gun beside him and a knife in his hand, according to police, who said he died at the scene.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Police shot an armed man, who died, near an elementary school early Tuesday in San Diego, authorities said.

Officers responded around 6:45 a.m. to a report of a man sitting on the Fay Elementary School campus with a gun beside him and a knife in his hand, according to San Diego Police Department Lt. Travis Easter.

The officers made contact with the man about a block from the school, in the 5100 block of Orange Avenue, and tried to de-escalate the situation, but were unsuccessful, Easter said in a press briefing posted on the department’s Instagram page.
