Here are five of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Hospitals here are filling quickly due to what is being called a "tripledemic." It’s the triple threat of influenza (the flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19. While there is not yet a treatment for RSV, San Diego residents are urged to get a flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine. United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra commented during a recent visit that Federal and health officials are working to keep us safe. The question is: Will everyone listen? (NBC San Diego)
- According to an international team of researchers led by UCSD, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, is responsible for damaging synapses in the brain. These are connections that allow brain cells to communicate with each other. However, according to Alysson R. Muotri, professor at UCSD School of Medicine, treatment is available using sofosbuvir, a drug already on the market. Clinical trials will need to be done to confirm the finding. (Times of San Diego)
- Compared to many other cities, San Diego succeeds in housing the homeless. Thanks to a program called PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), those in need can get help finding a place to live. San Diego minimizes the number of agencies a person needs to process through to get housing. The city has workers to help homeless individuals find housing, and it calculates the value of housing vouchers by neighborhood. According to the Los Angeles Times, San Diego has dramatically outperformed its neighbors to the north. (Los Angeles Times)
- It’s that time of year: Set your clock back one hour starting on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 a.m. At that time, you need to set your clocks back to 1 a.m. and slide into Pacific Standard time (PST). The new time schedule will result in earlier sunsets. Sleep schedules may be disrupted as a result of the time change, affecting both people and pets. Many San Diegans would like to make daylight saving time permanent, but the change was put on hold by the House of Representatives. So, in the meantime, fall back and enjoy the extra hour! (Patch)
- Help! We need fosters! Shelters are full and the San Diego Humane Society needs your help. The society estimates that it will need 50 foster volunteers to help during the critical space shortage. Dogs, kittens, cats, reptiles, rabbits, and others are available to be fostered. If you have some love to give these pets on a temporary basis, now is the time to act. Take a look at the SDHS' website, where you can also find information on how to apply to the program. (10 News)
