- Getting frustrated at the pump? Wondering why prices are so high, while oil prices have dropped? Prices have dropped from over $130 a barrel to less than $100. “If oil prices fall dramatically, you should expect to see then that the gas prices fall dramatically,” Gin said. “Oil companies are making record profits at this point with the price of oil rising and so it looks really suspicious. There might not be any sort of smoking gun in there, but it seems like the oil companies and gas stations then are padding their profits.” To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - After another dry year, the data show that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plea for a 15 percent voluntary cutback in water use has failed. Maybe it is time to get tough. With a mandate, it’s a very clear message about the need,” said Heather Cooley, research director with the Pacific Institute, a global water think tank. “Having a mandatory water restriction is in everyone’s benefit,” said Newsha Ajami, who is the chief strategy and development officer for research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. However, mandating California’s water suppliers to cut back further is likely to be a controversial move. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (CALMatters)
- He caught the eye of the White House. President Joe Biden invited Alec Calac, student at UCSD School of Medicine, and MD/PhD candidate, to participate in a forum with an exclusive group of experts in the fields of medicine and public health. Maria Rosario Araneta, associate dean of diversity and community partnerships at the Department of Family Medicine, said: “He frames the urgency of addressing health inequities in the American Indian and Alaskan Native communities with historical knowledge and a social justice perspective.” When Calac completes his studies at UCSD, he wants to work in public health. “I would like to eventually take my medical and public health training to Washington, DC and lead the Indian Health Service. My leadership has led me to this Roundtable, and I am so fortunate to have a direct line to The White House to promote health equity for Indigenous Peoples.” To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link.
