Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. Your garden received a good drenching this week, with rainfall ranging from less than one inch to 5+ inches. Along the coast, rainfall measured up to an inch or so. The inland valleys received up to a couple of inches. Up in the mountains, it totaled up to 5+ inches. The desert received one-tenth of an inch. Exactly how much rain did your town receive? Read on for further details. (NBC San Diego)
  2. Recently, a dead pelican was found by an employee of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The bird tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, (HPAI). The disease is highly contagious and can become fatal. Although the bird was not in the care of the Safari Park, precautionary efforts were put in place to prevent spread of the disease to birds at the zoo. If you notice a bird that seems off balance or having trouble walking, breathing, congestion, coughing or sneezing, report it to Project Wildlife with the Humane Society. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  3. So far, there have been cases of tuberculosis (TB) at schools in San Diego’s Mission Bay and Montgomery high schools. Now, at the Fred H. Rohr Elementary School in Chula Vista, students and staff may have been exposed. Individuals at the school can be tested at no cost. Tuberculosis is an airborne disease with symptoms including persistent cough, fever, night sweats, as well as unexplained weight loss. For more information call 619-692-8621. (NBC San Diego)
  4. Having turkey for Thanksgiving dinner? If so, don’t pour the cooking grease down your sink. Cooking grease and oils can damage household plumbing, sewer lines and dishwashers. Southern California-based Eastern Municipal Water District urges residents to find alternative methods of disposing of these fluids. Wipe the leftover cool grease off dishes and pans and into a coffee can, or other disposable container, and toss it into a trash bin. (Times of San Diego)
