Amur Leopards at the San Diego Zoo
  1. Two new Amur leopard cubs came into the world at the San Diego Zoo, thanks to their prolific parents Satka and Oskar. Though the cubs haven't had their first full veterinary exam, and their sex is still unknown, the babes already displayed their unique personalities. With two big brothers and two big sisters, the leopards will not be lonely. Only 300 Amur leopards are in existence worldwide. Visit them in the Africa Rocks area of the zoo. (NBC San Diego)
  2. Golden Hall has been home to more than 500 people, but now the shelter, owned by the City of San Diego, must close. Operating under a temporary permit, the infrastructure and plumbing weren't built for the long term. While some families will be sent to a motel in Barrio Logan, others will be relocated as shelter beds become available. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  3. Rain causes potholes, and the San Diego area has more than its share of both. While 60 patch crews with bagged asphalt were sent out to repair the roads, continued rain is hampering efforts. More than 1,350 cases were reported to the city, and the most serious potholes will be repaired first. (NBC San Diego)
  4. Two researchers from San Diego’s Sanford Burnham Prebys Center, Cosimo Commisso, Ph.D., and Susanne Heynen-Genel, Ph.D., were awarded a $2.6 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The researchers will work to advance a new treatment approach for pancreatic cancer, which would stop pancreatic tumors from growing, while preventing their spread to surrounding healthy cells. The project will take four years to complete. (Sanford Burnham Prebys)
