San Diego Ballet Celebrates Dance, Latin Music In Season Opener, ‘Signature Moves'

San Diego Ballet opens their fall season in Chula Vista with “Signature Moves,” a performance merging Latin rhythms and ballet.

The program features two audience favorites, Que Bonito Amor, performed to live mariachi music, and Mambomania, one of Artistic Director Javier Velasco’s signature works, set to music from his childhood.

The ballet performs the shows at 8 p.m. Sept. 24 and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Southwestern College Performing Arts Center. Ticket prices range from $15 to 45.

“San Diego Ballet is committed to the presentation of work that speaks to our Southern California audiences. This show is just one of the ways we do this,” Velasco said.

He described the pieces as being “set to Latin music in a way that celebrates both the music and the dance equally.”

Music in “Signature Moves” will be performed by Mariachi Garibaldi, a Southwestern performing ensemble.

The season continues with:

• The Jungle Book, a blend of ballet, jazz and hiphop dance, with puppets, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Joan B. Kroc Theater at the Kroc Center.
• The Nutcracker, the timeless Christmas tale, from at 1 and 5 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Magnolia in El Cajon. (In addition, auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Dorothea Laub Dance Place in Liberty Station).
