San Diego County, Rady Children's Roll Out Major Testing Plan

The partnership aims to test up to 2,000 kids and their families daily for COVID-19.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego County and Rady Children's Hospital on Wednesday announced they're partnering up to expand testing for the new coronavirus.

In a release, the county said its aim is to test 2,000 kids and their families each day for the next six months at Rady's hospital, clinics and health care partners.

The release states the partnership aims to start out by giving 400 tests a day and will work toward its goal of 2,000 in the next six weeks. Patients will not be charged for the tests.

“COVID-19 is not a disease that only impacts older adults,” Dr. Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said in a statement. “Pediatric cases have been reported in San Diego County.”

Wooten said of nearly 7,000 COVID-19 cases reported in the region, 391 have been kids and teenagers. Further, about 52 percent of cases have been in people between 20- and 49-years-old.

CAL FIRE and San Diego County are also offering testing for residents in rural communities on the following occasions. Testing is offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 2-1-1.
