Here are five of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. Traveling between San Diego to Los Angeles by rail this holiday season? You may be inconvenienced. Amtrak and Metro Link service is likely to be suspended into February, as tracks in San Clemente are being stabilized after showing sign of movement. Pacific Surfliner passengers are being bused between Irvine and Oceanside. This could mean a very long trip for commuters. Be sure to plan ahead. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  2. Fentanyl has killed more than 800 San Diegans in 2021. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, 50 times stronger than heroin. Now, Mayor Todd Gloria has signed an executive order, directing the police department to prioritize fentanyl-related crimes. Police Chief David Nisleit agreed that San Diego needs a more aggressive policy for enforcement against the drug traffickers. (Fox 5 San Diego)
  3. San Diegans voted in favor of Measure B, ending free trash pickup for most single-family homeowners. Now, the city can charge a fee for trash pickup. According to Proposition 218, a third-party consultant will crunch the numbers to determine a fair charge. This process could take a year or more to complete. (Voice of San Diego)
  4. Club patrons at The Rail in Hillcrest will be checked for both ID and firearms. The LGBTQ+ club will screen patrons with metal detectors and will turn away anyone with a weapon. Along with trained security guards, the staff will take active shooter classes with the San Diego Police Department. According to the owner, the goal is to maintain a safe place for workers, as well as patrons. (NBC San Diego)
  5. Operation Santa has begun! Elves at the U.S. Postal Service have kicked off the campaign, and kids can now have their letters delivered to Santa at the North Pole. The USPS has held Operation Santa for 100 years. For information on how your child can write to Santa, or how a letter adopter can make a child’s wish come true, find out more.
