Before we get started: It was brought to my attention that the San Diego Daily was late in reporting the May 23 deadline for mail-in ballots. Please note that residents can still register to vote at their designated voting center from June 4-7 and cast their vote at the same time. For further details: (County News Center)
Here are the top stories today in San Diego:
- The unthinkable has happened again. A shooter terrorized a school in Texas, killing at least 19 students and two teachers. Here in San Diego, flags fly at half-mast. "Our nation is traumatized, our families are hurting, and we grieve deeply with the children, parents and teachers in the state of Texas as they grapple with this unconscionable act of violence," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher. "We must resolve to never give up the fight for commonsense federal gun safety legislation." Our hearts go out to the families of those lost in this horrific shooting. - It is resolved. The San Diego City Council has declared San Diego a 'safe city' for reproductive rights. The resolution passed 8 to 0. "No matter what happens with the Supreme Court ruling, no matter who you are or where you come from, no matter the color of your skin or your socioeconomic status, I want everyone to know that you are welcome in the city of San Diego to exercise your reproductive rights," Councilman Stephen Whitburn said. "I want all San Diegans who are scared and frustrated about this potential ruling to know that you have members of this city council and a mayor that have your back, and we will not back down." - It is sometimes referred to as “period poverty” and it is a health issue that women in San Diego sometimes face. Women cannot use food stamps or WIC to buy menstrual products. Often, they wear products for an extended time, putting themselves at risk for toxic shock syndrome, a serious bacterial infection. In order to address this health issue, the County will expand its Free4ME program to provide free sanitary products in 24 county-owned dispensers, community centers, and libraries. - It's pupping season, and the San Diego City Council has approved the closure of Point La Jolla and Boomer Beach May 1 through Oct. 31. The closure will allow sea lions to give birth, nurse, and care for their young in peace. The closure, which protects both sea lions and visitors, will be in place for the next seven years.
