San Diego Humane Society Sends Help Amid Devastating Los Angeles Fires

Staff members are bringing back adoptable dogs and donating crates and kennels to Pasadena Humane Society to assist with evacuation efforts.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society has sent help to evacuate pets impacted by the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area.

Staff members left in two vehicles Wednesday afternoon for Pasadena Humane Society. The first crew just arrived in Pasadena, while the second crew is still on the way, San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson told Patch.

"Earlier today, Pasadena Humane Society reached out to us for support in freeing up space in their shelter, so they could support their community evacuations from the nearby Eaton Fire," Thompson said.

At least five people were killed and several others were injured trying to escape the explosive Eaton Fire that scorched about 11,000 acres in the Altadena and Pasadena areas.

San Diego Humane Society staff members will return to San Diego with approximately 15 to 20 dogs that were already available for adoption, Thompson said. The dogs will be placed for adoption through San Diego Humane Society's two Oceanside campus locations after the organization completes its intake exams and protocols.

Shelter staff also packed crates and kennels to donate to Pasadena Humane Society to assist with their evacuation efforts.

"The staff members who deployed today are shelter staff," Thompson said. "Because San Diego is also under red flag warning and extreme wind and fire risk today and tomorrow, we have kept our emergency response team and humane law enforcement officers back to ensure our resources remain ready for anything that may occur locally."
