San Diego Mayoral Election Results: Todd Gloria Leads Barbara Bry
Assemblyman Todd Gloria and San Diego City Council President Pro Tempore Barbara Bry faced off to become the city's next mayor.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Assemblyman Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, appeared to be heading for victory Wednesday in the race to be San Diego's next mayor, outpacing City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry.
As of Wednesday morning, Gloria had 56.3 percent of the vote, while Bry had 43.7 percent, according to unofficial vote totals from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
It was unclear how many votes remained to be tallied, and with the prevalence of mail ballots in Tuesday's election, it could be days or weeks before final numbers are determined.

Bry said she was not ready to concede, but Gloria expressed confidence about his chances Tuesday night.
"Tonight, I believe we have made more than history," he said. If Gloria wins, he would become the first openly gay person elected to the position.

The winner of the race will replace Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Regardless of who wins, a Democrat will occupy the mayor's office for the first time since 2014.
Bry, 71, was elected to the San Diego City Council in 2016 to represent District 1, which includes the communities of La Jolla, Carmel Valley, Torrey Pines, University City and Del Mar Heights. Bry, a La Jolla resident who has called the city home for nearly 40 years, worked as a journalist and tech entrepreneur before joining the council.
Gloria, 42, was elected to the San Diego City Council in 2008 and served until 2016, including two years as council president and six months as acting mayor after Mayor Bob Filner resigned amid numerous sexual harassment claims. Gloria, a Mission Hills resident and a third-generation San Diegan, assumed the assemblyman role for the 78th District in 2016.
It was unclear how many votes remained to be tallied, and with the prevalence of mail ballots in Tuesday's election, it could be days or weeks before final numbers are determined.
There are still 370,000 ballots left to be counted, County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu announced Wednesday, but the county will not release additional results until 5 p.m. Thursday.
