Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. One program will address senior homelessness, and the other will aid the middle-income workforce. According to homeless advocate Amie Zamudio, “We are seeing a lot of newly unhoused seniors and that's really scary.” A quarter of homeless people here in San Diego are at least 55 years of age. A new rental assistance program for seniors will help keep a roof over their heads. The other program created in San Diego will help middle-income workers who earn too much money to qualify for low-income programs, but who do not earn enough money to be able to purchase a home. The county plans to create a revolving fund to offer low-interest loans to those middle-income workers. It is hoped that this program will help nurses, teachers, first responders and other local workers to purchase a home here in San Diego. (CBS News 8)
  2. There is a suicide crisis among military men and women in San Diego. Twenty members took their own lives while at Camp Pendleton. Looking at the numbers, young men, aged 25 and under, are almost twice as likely to die by their own hand as civilian men of similar age. The situation for young women is even worse. Most of these service members have not been in combat. They committed suicide on military bases where there is supposed to be access to mental health services. (Voice of San Diego)
  3. Bacteria levels at several local beaches have moved into the dangerous level. Beachgoers have been warned that the bacteria may cause illness. Torrey Pines State Beach and Avenida De La Playa in La Jolla Shores have exceeded state health standards. People have been advised to stay out of the water due to the bacteria levels. Seven other beaches were also affected. (Del Mar Times)
  4. The bear cubs had lost their mother. California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife in the Three Rivers part of Tulare County rescued the bears, and they were placed at the San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center. It was expected that the cubs would be returned to the wild. However, the cubs became acclimated to humans during their stay in Ramona, so the cubs could not be returned to the wild. This week the cubs were transported in an air-conditioned van to their new home at the Amarillo Zoo. (NBC San Diego)
