Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:
- Measure B has been approved. Now, all City of San Diego residents, instead of just some, will pay a fee for trash removal going forward. “Obviously, nobody wants to pay something if they already get it for free, but (people) also recognize the indefensibleness of disparity in who gets the benefit of the People’s Ordinance and the consequences that flow from that,” said Michael Zucchet, general manager of the Municipal Employees Association. (Voice of San Diego)
- A recent audit of San Diego’s towing program over the past five years found that more than 27 percent of car owners surrendered their cars because they couldn't pay fines owed. Many were low-income people who were homeless and living in their cars. The San Diego City Council will need to decide how the situation could be better managed. Boots instead of towing? Community service instead of fines? San Diego City Council Member Stephen Whitburn (District 3) commented "We need to enforce parking laws, but we ought not be taking and selling people's cars because of a parking ticket." (CBS News 8)
- County officials are urging San Diegan’s to avoid both COVID-19 and the flu by getting vaccinated now. Flu cases are rising in San Diego. Yet only 25 percent of residents have received the flu vaccine to date. At the same time, COVID-19 cases are rising too. Fourteen additional deaths bring the local COVID-19 death toll to 5,557. Stay healthy, get vaccinated. (Times of San Diego)
- Baby, it’s cold outside! Well, no, not really. This is San Diego, after all. But for those who like the winter ambiance, there are several venues to explore in the coming months. Ice skating rinks are open around town for you to enjoy. From San Marcos to Alpine, from Liberty Station to Coronado, there are options for skaters and non-skaters alike. Get out and have some fun this week! Read on to find out more. (Times of San Diego)
