- The pilot project was initiated after a homeless person’s question to the City of San Diego. In an area called ‘The Triangle,’ on the Border of East Village and Barrio Logan, volunteers distributed heavy-duty trash bags to the homeless for trash disposal into a dumpster. Homeless residents said that the program gave them a feeling of community and purpose. They also enjoyed the $2 per bag they were given for their efforts. The pilot program, funded by the Lucky Duck Foundation, has now ended. It is hoped that another group will step up to continue the program in the future. - There will be a new commission of arts and culture in San Diego County. According to a letter from the Board of Supervisors, a 13-member commission will be created to support and manage arts funding in our area. The board will nominate members, including two nominated by each supervisor, as well as three youth members. “To promote greater cultural diversity and inclusivity, and empower historically disenfranchised communities, it is important to elevate the work of smaller, emerging artists from communities that have not had access to arts and cultural resources.” To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - It is a holiday celebrating Chinese folklore. It is called 'Tanabata,' and it celebrates the meeting of two stars, Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to folklore, the two were separated by the Milky Way and could only meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month. Come join the fun of the ‘Tanabata’ celebration on Thursday, July 7, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Adults & kids are welcome. There will be games, performances, crafts, vendors, and food. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (KPBS)
