Here are the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. The number of monkeypox cases in San Diego is down.👩‍⚕️"We may have had a peak around August 6th in terms of the most amount of cases that we were seeing, and we continue to see a downward trend in cases since that time," Dr. Ankita Kadakia, the deputy public health officer for San Diego County, said. According to Dr. Kadakia, it was wise of San Diego to declare a health emergency in August. The declaration allowed the county time to access state funding for testing, vaccine supplies and infrastructure. Anyone wishing to get a vaccine for monkeypox can make an appointment online at MyTurn.ca.gov. (KPBS)
  2. 🏫It’s called Measure U, and it may help San Diego Unified School District retain teachers. If passed on Nov. 8, the district would set aside more than $200 million of the $3.2 billion bond to build 500 affordable housing units on district property for educators and other school personnel. The bond would also be used to renovate school buildings and upgrade security measures at the schools. Though taxes would not be raised, the district-wide property tax would be extended. (CBS News 8)
  3. Are you vegetarian or vegan?🥗If so, you may know that Oct. 1 is World Vegetarian Day, and that Nov. 1 is World Vegan Day. If you love plant-based foods, but also like to eat out, you will be pleased to know that San Diego ranked 9th-best city for vegans and vegetarians, according to the personal-finance website WalletHub's report on 2022’s Best Cities for Vegans & Vegetarians. (Times of San Diego)
  4. 🍺It’s back! The La Mesa Oktoberfest returns this weekend to celebrate its 49th year.
