Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego:
- With temperatures🌡️rising, the best place for you may be the beach or pool, or maybe you would prefer air-conditioning and a good movie — pass the🍿popcorn! However, if you are looking to get out and about in our beautiful city, there are many events this weekend. For instance, you can learn about the Native American experience at the Barona Powwow in Lakeside. You could enjoy the Rosen Box Project ballet at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park. Fleet Science Center will show "Jaws." Julian offers the Grape Stomp Festival at the Menghini Winery. There is an R&B Block Party at the Quartyard in the East Village. Point Loma Playhouse hosts the free Summer Shakes’ 22, at Liberty Station. You could just relax and enjoy the scenery at Balboa Park’s Spreckels Organ Pavilion. - We are all wondering “when will this plague🦠be over?” We’d love to put it in the past, but we can’t. COVID-19 cases are up in San Diego. There have been 1,935 cases over a three-day period. The county reported 753 new cases on Thursday, with five deaths from the virus. In addition, 518 infections were reported on Monday, and 664 on Tuesday. The total coronavirus cases in the county are 912,653 since the pandemic began. The death toll is now 5,464. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 also rose. Statistics do not reflect the number of cases out there that have not been reported. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
- With temperatures skyrocketing in San Diego, everyone is looking for a way to cool down. The City of San Diego has a secret weapon against this climate change that is heating us up. The city has an urban forest full of trees🌳that shade the landscape and lower the temperature for those standing beneath them. “Trees are known to cool neighborhoods in the summer by reducing the heat island effect through shading and evapotranspiration where trees take up moisture through the soil and release [it] into the air through the leaves of the tree,” explained Brian Widener, City of San Diego forester. Thinking towards the future and the effects of climate change, maybe what we need to do now is to plant more trees throughout San Diego. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - City of San Diego: "San Diegans are being asked to conserve energy through the Labor Day weekend as the electric grid may become strained by high energy demand. Here are some simple ways to stay cool while also cutting back on energy use: http://sdge.com/myenergy" (City of San Diego via Facebook)
- San Diego Humane Society: "San Diego has some of the best hikes, but when temperatures rise, scenic mountains, secret waterfalls, and clifftop viewpoints can be very dangerous — especially for our🐕pets. Before hitting the trails, check the weather to make sure it's not too warm for your pup." (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- San Diego Police Department: "The heat we’re seeing is no joke. From the coast to the mountains, we will be seeing extremely hot conditions. To help those looking for a place to stay cool, the city will be providing places for residents to stay cool, including recreation centers and libraries. You can visit sandiego.gov/cool-zones for the locations and hours of City facilities where they can go to cool down." (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)
- City of San Diego: "Starting today, the city is modifying its street sweeping program to help maximize the trash and debris removed from neighborhoods and prevent pollution from reaching the ocean."🌊 (City of San Diego via Facebook)
- San Diego County Library: "Sign up for a library card with #SDCL and get access to a one-million item collection packed with books, CDs, DVDs and more! Head to sdcl.org and get your card today. #librariesempower #libraries #books #reading" (San Diego County Library via Facebook)
