  1. More than 70 baby seadragons hatched in captivity at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. A male seadragon carried the seadragon eggs on the underside of its tail for up to six weeks, until the eggs hatched this past week. The event was part of a decades-long program to breed seahorses and seadragons in captivity. The babies are currently out of public view and are being monitored. For more information, click here. 2. Typically considered a waterborne problem, water pollution can become an airborne health issue as well. According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD, the pollution from ocean spray from the Tijuana River is now blowing inland in Imperial Beach. Further investigation will be necessary to determine the conditions that lead to the aerosolization of pathogens, the distance they travel and the possible public health implications. Continued studies will be financed through the 2023 omnibus spending bill. (Patch)
  3. With soaking rains, flooded streets, overflowing rivers, freezing cold and snow, you might think that this was the coldest San Diego winter on record. However, according to CBS 8 Chief Meteorologist Karlene Chavis, the National Weather Service, and CBS 8 Archives, our weather was worse in past years. Five decades ago, 50 inches of snow accumulated on Mt. Laguna in 24 hours, there was snow in Carlsbad, and the San Diego city limits sign was partially covered in snow. The coldest temperature was recorded in 1913, when downtown San Diego was tracked at 25 degrees. (CBS News 8)
  4. For years, scientists studied the happiness level of people from around the country. Economic difficulties, high inflation and other stressors certainly affect one’s mood. However, where one lives can also affect the happiness meter. Luckily for us, we live in a place with lovely weather and lots of sunshine. In fact, our beautiful San Diego is one of the happiest cities, according to WalletHub’s 2023's Happiest Cities in America report. (NBC San Diego)
