SAN DIEGO, CA — Critical fire weather conditions are expected Wednesday in parts of San Diego County, prompting the closure of some schools in the region.

Schools in several school districts will be closed due to high winds and potential power outages, according to the San Diego County Office of Education.

A red flag warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Thursday for the county's mountains and valleys, according to the National Weather Service.

"The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the County Office of Education said in a statement.
