Here are the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. The World Health Organization, and the State of California, have issued declarations of emergency due to monkeypox. Now, San Diego County has declared a state of emergency as well. "At this time, monkeypox outbreaks are disproportionately impacting our LGBTQ community, but we know it can spread to others," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said. "And it is vitally important that we not stigmatize any individual, that we not stigmatize any community, that we not cast any aspersions." The disease has hit males ages 27 – 58 years old, but it can be transmitted to anyone, of any age. A state of emergency declaration allows for state assistance and for the use of public health facilities for testing, contact tracing, and investigation. 2. Sewage lines, which have broken in Tijuana, have contaminated the waters just south of the border, but it may be just a matter of time before those waters foul the beaches around San Diego. The problem has inspired Imperial Beach activist Baron Partlow to create “Stop the Poop” to advise residents of the state of the waters. So far, the poop has not entered the San Diego area. 3. If you have a student entering college away from home, you know that housing is already sold out in San Diego County. Housing is also sold out around the country. An estimated 10 percent of students are homeless. Many are couch surfing or living out of their cars. Those in the housing field urge students to lease their apartments as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to the college of their choice. 4. The number is shocking! Almost 18,000 San Diego students are experiencing homelessness. You can help by supporting the ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign which collects funds through online and in-store donations. You can donate at Ralphs or Food 4 Less grocery stores, or donate online, through the end of August. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (San Diego Patch)
