Here are the top stories today in San Diego:
- After the deadly shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, the LGBTQ+ community here in San Diego is on edge. Why? The alleged shooter has family ties here in San Diego. Area residents joined Mayor Todd Gloria and Police Chief David Nisleit in a "Stop the Hate" solidarity march through Hillcrest. In an abundance of caution, Chief Nisleit ordered increased patrols in the community. According to the FBI, there are no threats in San Diego at this time. (NBC San Diego)
- The statistics are staggering: Police report that 30 students with mental health crises were removed from San Diego schools last year. The spike in cases mirrors the numbers of calls reported throughout the country. Anxiety, depression and self-esteem issues are often at the root of student mental illness. Governor Gavin Newsom has pledged $4.7 billion in state funds to "reimagine mental health and substance use services." The funds are a welcome addition to our public health efforts here in San Diego. Mental illness affects students of every color and every economic status. (CBS News 8)
- The respiratory infection pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is on the rise in San Diego County. In fact, San Diego has the highest rate of pertussis in the State of California. Children and babies are most susceptible to this bacterial infection. With COVID-19 cases, the flu, RSV, and now pertussis, local hospitals are being slammed. Doctors advise that people with coughs should not attend family gatherings over the holidays. (FOX 5 San Diego)
- Luckily for Karson, his canine vest saved his life. He is a San Diego police canine officer, a hero, and he has been stabbed on two occasions in the past four months. Several months ago, a felon stabbed Karson repeatedly in the head. Yesterday, a suspect stabbed Karson multiple times on other parts of his body. The good news is that Karson is well and back on duty today — thanks to a vest donated to the canine officer. (CBS News 8)

Outdoor irrigation is also prohibited during and within 48 hours of measurable rainfall." (City of San Diego via Facebook)
