Here are three of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Going to the beach? If so, you need to know that there has been a recall of sunscreen sold in California. The sunscreen may contain a cancer-causing agent. Retailers have been asked to remove the product from their stores. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
- Rents are rising, and increases can be as high as 10 percent. Usually California law caps annual rent increases at 5 percent. However, the cap is now 10 percent due to inflation. “This is a huge concern; rent is already higher than it was before. If a tenant gets a rent increase that they can no longer afford to pay, chances are they won't find another place to move to,” said Jose Lopez who is part of Alliance Californians for Community Empowerment, a nonprofit that works with tenants to prevent housing injustices. Tenants struggling to pay rent can check out nonprofits who can help. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (CBS News 8)
- The mayors and deputy mayors of 12 cities joined together behind closed doors to discuss the problem. “If you live in SD, you know we have a homeless problem. And it’s not just a problem, it’s a humanitarian crisis. And we have got to do some things differently. We can’t keep doing what we’ve been doing,” said Donnie Dee, president, and CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission. Dee will hold a similar symposium with city managers in January.
