Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:
- Mayor Todd Gloria plans to use a 42-room, city-owned facility in a former South Bay hotel to temporarily house homeless seniors. The seniors are in line for permanent housing but will live at the city’s facility until permanent placement is found for them. The mayor plans to announce additional city shelters over the next few months. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
- Emergency medical personnel rush to get patients to the hospital. Sometimes they must wait hours to offload their patients to the emergency rooms. This delay endangers the health of the patient. It also affects the efficiency of the emergency transport company. Is there a solution? To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (NBC San Diego)
- Those who are homeless and living on the streets will be offered shelter before they are ticketed or arrested for offenses associated with homelessness. "Camping on the sidewalk should not be an option when alternatives exist because people living on the streets and sidewalks is not without impacts on the neighborhoods where it is happening," Mayor Todd Gloria said. "And those impacts are growing and they're far more serious and consequential than ever." Though there is currently a shortage of shelters, Gloria plans to open more this year. - The heat is on! The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Sunday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m., in parts of San Diego County. Those working outside should drink water to stay hydrated. Seniors, vulnerable individuals and pets should stay in air-conditioned rooms. Call 911 in the case of heat stroke.
