Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Hot☀️enough for you? Well, the excessive🔥heat will be with us through Monday. Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees inland. What can one do during this excessive heat warning? Stay out of the sun, preferably in air-conditioned rooms, and drink plenty of fluids, particularly if you are working outside. It’s a good idea to check on relatives, neighbors, and friends. DO NOT leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. San Diego County have opened ‘Cool Zones’ for residents to cool off. The extreme heat also elevates fire danger. - Traffic on State Route 78 is expected to slow down to one lane due to brush clearing along the sides of the road. Areas between Ramona and Julian will be affected. The project is expected to take more than three📆months. “It’s really important to get the sides of the roads mowed down because of the wooden poles,” said Ramona resident Ted Nofal. Most power lines along the 78 are supported by wooden poles. Sparks from a passing car, a cigarette, or a catalytic converter could ignite a brushfire. - San Diego life sciences real estate is🔥hot! We have the third largest biotech cluster in the United States. Institutional Investors own 44 percent of the existing life science lab and office space here, in areas such as Sorrento Mesa, Sorrento Valley, Torrey Pines, and UTC. Biotech real estate has earned $3.4 billion in the last 12 months. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Patch)
- According to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, Lucas needed a pair of orthopedic👟shoes. Lucas is a 4-year-old African🐧penguin with a chronic degenerative condition known as bumblefoot. The condition can result in sepsis and death by infection if not treated. A company called Thera-Paw created custom shoes for Lucas. African penguins have suffered a massive population decline and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. From my notebook:
- San Diego Humane🐕Society: "The beagles are coming! We're busy preparing to welcome more than 100 beagles to San Diego Humane Society on Aug. 31. The dogs are among the 4,000 beagles who are part of a large-scale rescue from a Virginia-based company breeds and sells animals for use in scientific testing. These wonderful animals are being transported to San Diego on a flight organized by our partners at Greater Good Charities." (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- San Diego Police👮Department: "Being a victim of sexual assault and going through the Sexual Assault Evidence Kit Exam is undoubtedly stressful. We’re making it easier for survivors to view updates on their kit privately and in the comfort of their own surroundings. The San Diego Police Department has launched a new sexual assault victim portal to comply with Senate Bill 215 and provide electronic access to the status of their sexual assault evidence kits." (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)
- San Diego Humane🐱Society: "RJ and Pablo are concerned you haven't entered the Photo Fundraiser yet — but that's OK! There are still 2 days left to enter your pet's photo for a chance to be featured in our 2023 calendar! Pets with five or more votes are guaranteed a spot in the calendar or on the collage pages — and you'll have a chance to win fantastic prizes!" (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- The Arc of San Diego: "You voted, and the results are in! Congratulations to the winners of our door decorating contest! The winners of the popular vote are: 🥇1st Place: Sulpizio ADC 🥈2nd Place: Gerber Family Center 🥉3rd Place: North County. Thank you to everyone who voted, and to our clients and staff whose talent and creativity made this contest possible! You are all winners!" (The Arc of San Diego via Facebook)
- San Diego Police🚨 Department: "What do you do when a man swims to an island and sets it on fire? That was an interesting question for Northern Division who were called to help @sandiegofiredept after a man swam to an island and lit it ablaze. While lifeguards were fighting the fire, they saw the man was still on the island and let us know. The Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) responded and determined the fire was arson."
