Here are three of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. A group of UCSD researchers have helped fight over one thousand🔥fires this year. No, they are not firefighters. They are researchers working with a real-time fire modeling and predictions software program to help👨‍🚒firefighters. Called WIFIRE, the program is part of the Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS). The system gathers information about wildfire using infrared cameras and data from firefighters. WIFIRE crunches the information and within five minutes reports back to the firefighters in the field. “I’m super proud of what we’ve done,” smiled Jessica Block, Executive Director of WIFIRE. “So that firefighters can know exactly where the fire is and where it’s going,” said Block. “We respond to every vegetation fire that begins in the State of California. It’s pretty unusual for an academic group to be a part of a program like this,” Block said. “It’s a real altruistic program with good people that are actually making a difference and learning together how to make this process better over time.” To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. 2. It’s a lovely day in San Diego. You decide to go outside and do some gardening. Then Ouch! A mosquito🦟bite! It’s annoying and itchy, and it can transmit a disease. We are experiencing an Aedes Mosquitos Plague. "Anything that can hold water could be a breeding ground for the mosquitos," Arugay said. "A person could have 25 planters in their backyards and every single saucer could hold these mosquitos." Aedes mosquitos have been known to carry yellow fever and the Zika virus, there has been no transmission of these diseases recorded. It is likely that Aedes mosquitos are flourishing in your backyard. Take a look around your property. Check out your empty plant pots, saucers, children’s toys, etc. Stop the bite! 3. Its purpose is to help🦸‍♀️Latinas escalate to where they want to go. It is a Mexican American women’s organization called MANA. “This program is not for a woman that doesn't know what she wants. She's in a professional career already. She needs to keep going up, really improving, escalating where she wants to go,” she said. “The fact that so often Latinas are really the first in their families to move forward, we really don't have those role models and especially in the professional job fields, she said. "And our attempt to address this problem was through this wonderful leadership program." To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
