- At the request of the California Office of Emergency Services, San Diego Fire-Rescue sent 15 men and one woman to Northern California to help residents escape rushing waters as a result of the rains. These specialists, part of the technical rescue team, have been trained in extricating people from flooded areas, structural collapse and sinkholes caused by ground saturation. They know that the work is dangerous, but the SDFD Fire-Rescue team is ready to meet the challenge. San Diego is proud! (NBC San Diego)
- The city declared all hands on deck to fill potholes around town. More than 1,100 open pothole repair requests are on the SD Get It Done App. With nine trucks, it usually takes the city 10 days to repair them. Now, with so many reports coming in, it will certainly take more time. Location and severity of damage will be considered for priority repair. If a pothole causes damage to a car, drivers should document the damage, take photos, and file a claim with the city here. (CBS News 8)
- New green recycling bins and small kitchen pails are coming to the Golden Hill neighborhood beginning this week. The new system will help bring San Diego into compliance with state law, which requires residents/businesses to reduce disposable waste by 75 percent in 2025. Food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings must be placed into kitchen pails, and later placed into the green recycling bins. The goal is to help fight climate change. (FOX 5 San Diego)
- January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and a group of women has come together for an event focused on stopping human trafficking. According to the Women of Success Expo, North County has higher numbers of victims than San Diego. The event will be held this afternoon at the North County Family Justice Center in San Marcos. Tickets are available for the expo – register here. (NBC San Diego)
