  1. Are more coyotes in your neighborhood than ever before? According to Andy Blue of the Humane Society’s Project Wildlife campus in Ramona, many coyotes were displaced from their dens by recent rains. Blue offers the following advice: do not feed them, do not put dog/cat food outside your residence, and do not leave your compost pile accessible. If you run into a coyote, make yourself appear larger, and make loud noises like clapping. To keep coyotes away, find out more. (NBC 7 San Diego)
  2. In her presentation to the Environment Committee of the City Council, Bethany Bezak of the Stormwater Department pointed out the importance of adequately funding the stormwater infrastructure. An estimated $335 million annually is needed for the department to do its job properly, yet it receives only 30% of that. A bond issue might be the answer to funding stormwater infrastructure to prevent flooding throughout the area. (Times of San Diego)
  3. In a series of experiments, Scripps Oceanography is tracking the flow of water from the Penasquitos Lagoon to the ocean to study how fresh water plumes affect ocean waters. The pink dye used for the experiments is safe, and it's released during ebb tide. Additional experiments will be done through February. The research is being funded by the National Science Foundation, and will help to provide data about the spread of sediment, pollutants, larvae and other important material off Torrey Pines Beach. (Times of San Diego)
  4. Dream of sailing a tall ship? At the Maritime Museum of San Diego, folks learn the ropes on the Star of India. The Sail Training 101 class is held every year and teaches students about masts, yards, sails, ropes, cables, knots and all the other features of a tall ship. Once trained, new volunteer crew members may sail on the Californian, the San Salvador or the Star of India. (Cool San Diego Sights!)

(San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
