63,000 Jeeps Recalled Because They Could Suddenly Lose Power

The vehicles were also at risk of losing the ability to park.

SAN FRANCISCO — Jeep Cherokee drivers in the Bay Area may receive a recall notice in the coming weeks after more than 63,000 of the vehicles were recalled this month because of an issue that could cause a sudden loss of power, according to federal authorities.

The recall affects certain 2017-19 Jeep Cherokees that contain a power transfer unit that may become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in a loss of drive power or park function, according to a letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash,” Recall Management Division Chief Alex Ansley said in the letter to Chrysler. “A loss of park function can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.”
