Another Huge Sinkhole in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission says repairs to a sinkhole that formed in the city's Yerba Buena neighborhood this evening will begin Wednesday morning.

Huge Sinkhole Opens in San Francisco, Muni Lines Affected

A 12-foot by 5-foot section of Mission Street collapsed between New Montgomery and Second streets around 5:30 p.m.

The hole is roughly nine feet deep, and a broken sewer main was found at the bottom. The cause of the sewer break is not yet known, but "age is likely a factor," according to the commission. That segment of the sewer line is made of brick, and dates back to 1875. The site is secure, but Mission Street will remain closed between New Montgomery and Second streets through Wednesday.

San Francisco Municipal Railway lines 14 and 14R are being rerouted. Officers with the San Francisco Police Department were reportedly first on scene this evening. The front end of a vehicle was caught in the sinkhole, officers helped occupants get to safety before the vehicle was towed out.

Repairs are expected to be completed Wednesday, according to police.
