SAN FRANCISCO, CA- A new sinkhole opened up on a San Francisco street today, but utility officials say it is much smaller than one that opened up on Mission Street earlier this week and should be quickly repaired.
The depression in the road, around a foot and a half across, was reported around 9 a.m. on Polk Street at Post Street, according to San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Charles Sheehan. Sheehan said the hole developed in an area with an old, out-of-service pipeline that had caused some sand and dirt to shift.
The hole is not causing any major traffic issues and Sheehan said he expected it to be repaired by the end of the day. The larger sinkhole on Mission between New Montgomery and Second streets that opened up on Tuesday has been temporarily filled in with dirt and sand and a bypass pipeline. On Friday, work crews will begin installing a new 36-inch pipeline to replace a broken 3-by-5-foot brick sewer main that dates to 1875.

No one was injured when the sinkhole formed around 5:30 p.m., although the front end of a vehicle became caught in it. Police were able to help the vehicle's occupants get out safely before the car was pulled out.
