BART Suspensions Result In Widespread Delays

BART riders faced major service disruptions Wednesday on multiple lines due to a rail defect.

BAY AREA — BART riders faced major service disruptions early Wednesday morning after transit officials announced unscheduled maintenance affecting multiple lines due to a rail defect. Residual delays persisted into late morning, even after full service resumed.

In advisories around 4:50 a.m., transit officials said BART's Red line service between Richmond and Millbrae stations was suspended, while Green line service between Daly City and West Oakland stations was also temporarily halted.

Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays of up to 20 minutes on the San Francisco Line in all directions, as trains were single-tracking between Montgomery Street and 16th Street Mission stations.

"This service plan is currently in place because crews found a rail defect between Montgomery and Powell overnight that must be corrected. We do inspections every night to ensure our system is in safe working order. Crews are working quickly and we will let you know when they are done," BART officials said on social media around 5:30 a.m.

To reach Millbrae station, riders can use a shuttle train operating between San Francisco International Airport and Millbrae stations, and transfer to or from the Yellow line (Antioch-SFO). Passengers traveling from Richmond station to Millbrae station are advised to take the Orange line toward Berryessa and transfer at MacArthur station to the Yellow line.

For riders affected by the Green line suspension and are traveling from San Francisco, they can board a Blue line train bound for Dublin/Pleasanton and transfer at Bay Fair station to the Orange line for service to Berryessa. Passengers from Berryessa can take an Orange line train toward Richmond or MacArthur stations and transfer at Bay Fair station to reach Daly City via the Blue line.

As of late morning, BART reports continued delays on multiple lines, though full service has largely resumed.
