The Bay Area Eatery Crawl Turning Asian American History Into a Menu Until Oct. 31
Presented by the non-profit Asian American Futures

This October, three Bay Area kitchens are using flavor to tell the stories textbooks often forget.
From a pastry that pays homage to R&B legend Sugar Pie DeSanto to a Danish honoring Filipino farmworkers who led the Delano Grape Strike, the Feed it Forward Eatery Crawl invites diners to experience Asian American history, one limited-time bite or sip at a time.
A New Kind of Food Crawl
The month-long collaboration, organized by nonprofit Asian American Futures (AAF), links Tarts de Feybesse in Oakland, Christine’s in the Mission, and York Street Collective in the Valencia corridor. Each stop created a dish or drink inspired by a pivotal story of Asian American resilience.

- Christine’s, recently named one of The Infatuation San Francisco’s “Top 9 Pop-Up Bakeries,” reimagines Filipino Mechado as a laminated Delano Mushroom Mechado Danish, honoring the Filipino farmworkers who walked out of the grape fields in 1965.
- At York Street Collective, bartenders pour Keep it Cumin, a cocktail reflecting the shared diasporic roots of its mixologists an edible conversation about migration, memory, and spice.
- Over in Oakland, Tarts de Feybesse: helmed by 2025 James Beard semifinalists Monique and Paul Feybesse is serving a Bamboo Trompe L’oeil, a delicate pastry inspired by Sugar Pie DeSanto, the Filipina-American soul singer who helped shape the sound of the 1960s.
Stories on the Plate
The initiative builds on AAF’s ongoing Feed it Forward campaign, which launched earlier this year with a pop-up in Hayes Valley that drew more than 500 visitors where they learned about the friendship between activists Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X through Tostadas by Tacos Sincere.
Why It Matters
Asian American Futures’ research reveals that narratives of civic engagement and community action help model positive identity for a demographic often overlooked in national storytelling.

The nonprofit hopes these collaborations will encourage other chefs and restaurateurs to explore social history through food and inspire diners to reflect on the collective future being built at every table.
