SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco is America’s No. 1 food capital, according to a recent study by Clarify Capital, which ranked cities by food culture.

The ranking used Yelp data and took into account cuisine diversity, the ratio of mom-and-pop to chain restaurants, average rating, average review count and affordability. Clarify Capital also surveyed 1,000 Americans about their dining out preferences.

“San Francisco was the undisputed culinary capital of the US, scoring 91.47 points out of 100,” the website said in a blog post about the study. “The City by the Bay's vibrant food scene, diverse offerings, and innovative approaches to food have solidified its position at the top of the list.”

The city also had the highest ratio of mom-and-pop to chain restaurants, according to Clarify Capital.

California dominated the ranking’s top 10, snagging seven spots.

In addition to San Francisco at No. 1, Oakland was No. 2, while San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose filled spots four through seven, respectively. Irvine was ninth.
