California Bakery Serves Up $29 Bread

Les Gourmands​ is serving luxury bread and Reddit users are going crazy about it.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Would you pay $29 for a loaf of bread? A new bakery in SoMa thinks you might. Les Gourmands is serving up a $29 brioche that reportedly feeds about four people, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The cost of the food item is receiving mixed reviews on Reddit, the newspaper reports.

"$30 is a reasonable price if it comes with a whole avocado," wrote Reddit user, johnnny1888.

"That bread better be made by Norwegian bachelor farmers, out of wheat gathered on a moonless night after being watered by holy water and tears of dragons," wrote user pietya.

Another user tied in a famous quote by the French queen known for her indulgences.

"Fun fact: Marie Antoinette didn’t actually say “let them eat cake” she said “let them eat brioche.” It was $30 a loaf back then too so...it doesn’t make things any better," milkis wrote.

The owner of the bakery, Sylvain Chaillout, told the newspaper that the price of his goods isn't "an ego trip."

"One reason for the hefty price is that Chaillout has established an 18-month paid apprenticeship program to train a new generation of bakers in classic French techniques. No culinary training required," the newspaper wrote.
