📰 News we're reading

1. Construction begins on 22-story mixed-income housing tower in San Francisco (californiaconstructionnews.com) — A 22-story mixed-income housing tower is finally rising at 1111 Sutter St. in San Francisco’s Lower Nob Hill, bringing 303 new apartments, including 101 below-market-rate units. Backed by union labor and federal financing, the project adds childcare, fitness, and rooftop amenities, and is part of City Hall’s broader push to expand San Francisco’s strained housing supply.

2. PG&E transformer fire prompts further power outages for thousands of SF residents (ktvu.com) — Thousands of San Francisco residents in the Richmond, Golden Gate Park, and Presidio areas lost power Sunday evening after a PG&E transformer caught fire near 12th and Balboa. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, no damage was reported, and PG&E estimated electricity would be restored by early Monday morning.

3. Oasis, SF's drag nightlife center, gets a reprieve from permanent shutdown, owner says (localnewsmatters.org) — San Francisco’s beloved LGBTQ nightclub Oasis in SoMa has been saved from permanent closure thanks to a major gift from local philanthropists to its nonprofit arm, Oasis Arts. The venue will still close temporarily for several months to regroup, with its owner framing the rescue as a win for queer artists and the city’s cultural identity.

4. Beyond the Scroll: Museums, AI, and the Value of Attention (thecrimson.com) — San Francisco readers may recognize the SFO Museum’s “Women of Afrofuturism” show, which sparked online debate for its AI-assisted portraits and how we define “AI slop.” Using that controversy and other exhibits worldwide, the piece explores how museums can thoughtfully integrate AI art while still protecting human creativity and deeper audience attention.
