SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Coast Guard rescue crews evacuated an 85-year-old passenger from the Ruby Princess cruise ship on Wednesday evening, not long after the ship left port. Watchstanders fielded a call for help from the ship shortly after 6:30 p.m. as the vessel sat near Alcatraz. The ship's crew told the Coast Guard the passenger had suffered a leg injury during transit through the San Francisco Bay.

The watchstanders coordinated a response boat, which launched out of Coast Guard Station San Francisco shortly before 8:30 p.m. Officials said the medevac crew arrived at the ship within minutes.

The rescue team secured the passenger and took him to Gas House Cove, where medics were waiting on shore to provide help.
